Treatment of Piles in the Book of Ayurveda

Piles

Ayurveda is a growing field which offers treatment for many illnesses. One of those illnesses is piles. In Ayurvedic medicine piles are treated with a variety of herbs and massage, not surgery. Today we will discuss the treatments that are available to cure piles and its symptoms.

Piles are one of the most common digestive problems that people all around the world deal with every day without knowing what causes them or what their treatment options could be. The condition has no specific cause but it usually appears as a result of an imbalance in certain body parts due to our lifestyle and diet choices which can lead to tissue damage, inflammation, dehydration, constipation etc.

Many people do not even think that their condition can be treated with modern medicine but this is far from true. Based on the world’s oldest book of wisdom known as “Ayurveda” there are numerous treatments that can be prescribed to cure or treat piles.

Many medicines are available over the counter which help in relieving pain and itching associated with piles for the periods during which they are active. However, many medicines also have side effects which may or may not be desirable for you and your family members.

Curcumin, an ingredient of turmeric is a widely used and trusted pain killer and anti-inflammatory. It is mostly consumed through herbal teas or foods with turmeric. You need to apply a little amount on the area specific to your pain and inflammation after which it will start providing you relief within 20 minutes. It also prevents new blood clots from forming which means that it reduces the chances of your piles bleeding again in future. Turmeric can also be used as a dietary supplement for treatment of piles.

Piles, or haemorrhoids, are swollen blood vessels in the anal canal. These may be painful and sometimes bleed. They can be caused by straining during bowel movements and pregnancy, or due to certain medical conditions such as diabetes. They can also be idiopathic, that is caused by no known reason.

Ayurvedic treatment for piles generally includes massaging the area with warm coconut oil followed by drinking this oil along with half a teaspoon of honey mixed in warm milk twice in a day for two days. It is advisable to remain on a high fibre diet while following this treatment plan and also to avoid constipation as much as possible (it will make things worse).

The treatment is normally effective in 3-4 days.

If it is not possible to tolerate the oil, a herbal alternative can be tried. One such agent is asafoetida (a bitter tasting substance), which should be soaked in warm water for 15 minutes before use and placed on the affected area for a few minutes. However, this can aggravate the condition and so it should only be used as a last resort for those who are extremely sensitive to its pungent smell. It is advisable to take a herbal detoxification tablet and a general tonic or an iron tonic as well as a laxative two days before the treatment.

The other commonly used Ayurvedic medicine for piles is Rajrechan Churna, which can be taken along with warm water every morning. This medicine has to be continued for 3 months.

A better alternative for long-term use is a solution of 10ml each of Rajrechan Churna and Dashamoola in 2 litres of water. This should be drunk twice daily, morning and evening, before breakfast and dinner respectively. It can also be taken hot or warm. However, for those people who find this bitter, adding 10ml of honey to the solution and drinking it mixed with warm water will help increase its palatability.

Gastric lavage (stomach wash) with castor oil can be used as a last resort if all else fails. This can also be repeated every day for 2-3 weeks if required (except when there are any bleeding tendencies). It is important to follow this up with the precaution of taking iron and laxative tonics to avoid electrolyte imbalance.
